This is where all the tourist groups begin to gather and there are people getting their last smoke before they go inside. The entrance is massive and the history of why its called the Meridian is important so I must advise that having a tour guide is THE best way to see this site and the many other sites in...

The main gate for visitors and awe-inspiring! We did not realize until further in, that the Meridian Gate is actually like a 'bridge' ... as a moat surrounds the majority of the Forbidden City.

This is a part of the visit to the Forbidden City. Actually, this forms the only entrance to Forbidden City. The Gate is exactly along the Meridian axis and the entire Forbidden City is built symmetric to this axis. We reached the Gate around 9am, but there were already huge crowds.
