My husband was blown away by the gem of this island. We did the climb up the Big Buddha, went to the temple there, and better, chanced upon some trails (one of which was the Lantau Island Peak) - amazing views there. Just be sure to wear proper shoes, and bring sunscreen, a hat and of course mosquito repellent and... More

If you have half a day of leisure time to spare while in Hong Kong, you may enjoy taking the aerial tram from the MTR station at Tung Chung up the mountain to near the top of Lantau Island at Ngong Ping, where you can see the Tian Tan ("Giant") Buddha; the largest, seated, outdoor, bronze Buddha in the world.... Village was a little too Disneyfied. Monkey theater was not worth it. Reminded me of the Tiki Room at Disneyland. Buy the ticket for the Giant Buddha and snack. After you tour the Buddha you can have a snack of 2 dim sum and rice noodles in the Monastery. Yummy!

Big Buddha is amazing. Pay to walk up to the statue, you get a cold water and an ice cream as well as great views and photo opportunities and a museum visit thrown in. Then take the bus to Tai O. Walk through the village and market streets. Before you leave, pay the 20 HKD (about $2.85 USD) to take... More

You can take an amazing cable car ride to the top of a mountain and then hike down to a beautiful beach on the other side and have a late lucy on the sand of an unspoiled beach.

I am sure that BIG BUDDHA is one of the highlight of HK. But there are more to Lantau Island. one must visit Mui Wo, Tai O as well as Discovery Bay. One friend said that travelling by ferry to Discovery Bay is like travelling by boat to Corsica.

Like: a) Nice scenery but provided u muz climb the long staircases. It's very windy up there, bring a windcoat if u wn. b) The shows "Monkey Tale" and "Walk with Buddha" are worth it. Buy the HKD 250 per prs package. Including round trip with crystal cable car and free admission to Monkey's Tale show and Walk with Buddha.... More

Lantau Island is the largest island in Hong Kong. Ngong ping is the main plateau in Lantau. Po Lin Monastery was built and a bronze tian an buddha or giant buddha statue about 85 ft was built there. You can ride Ngong Ping cable car to the island. It takes about 30 minutes ride. I tried the crystal cable car and... More

We took the ferry over to Lantau Island, then the bus up to the monastery and the Big Buddha. It was very misty the day we were there, which added to the spiritual atmosphere (and meant you couldn't see the tourist shops!). Saw an excellent performance by the Shaolin monks at the monastery. Took the train back to Hong Kong... More
