Despite Quito having a stereotype as dangerous, I never encountered any problems the two times that I visited the city. Perhaps speaking Spanish might help, but you can generally get by with English.

Stay in Old Town! It is beautiful with gorgeous churches within walking distance. If you are there on a Monday morning, you can see the changing of the guards ceremony at the Presidential Palace at 11 am every week! It was very cool!
