I didn't tour the monastery with a guide, but still got the feel for how the women of means lived in this cloistered convent throughout the past few hundred years. The location is beautiful. more

Theres no doubt that Arequipa is one of the best cities for Spanish colonial architecture in Peru, but the Monasterio de Santa Catalina (which was really a convent) is the best of the lot. To visit this place is to step back in time. The place is like a city within a city. The allyways even have their own street... more

This was really the only tourist spot I saw in Arequipa, but it was a memorable one, giving quite a picture of the cloistered life of the nuns, not only in centuries past but up to the present day. I wish now I'd taken more time and paid more attention. more
