If you're a tourist visiting Montevideo, don't come out of your way to visit. You'll only find a wonderful building in very bad repair, and surrounding area is not safe.
It's really a shame. I am Montevidean and really feel bad about this beautiful building that is in ruins and was once the main train station. Hopefully, will be restored shortly.
If you're interested in trains or railroad stations, the Central Railway Station is a must. Though not in use, you can imagine how great this station must have been when in operation. This railway station was opened on July 15th, 1897. It is closed since March 1rst, 2003, derelict and dirty. Despite that, it ss a great building. Trains now leave from a new tiny station half a km to the North.
