The flora and fauna part was interesting but is falling apart. Botanical garden is part of the museum, and I supose it is nice in summer. Not enough explained.

Funny working hours and lack of finance diminish extreme importance of this national institution and its valuable exhibitions. Normally it would be "Must See" for every visitor.
Other than the history, I liked the nice courtyard. Even governmental parties are held here :) Note that the curious marks on the pavement were created by bombs from the latest wars.
We visited the National Museum on the 9th of January 2012, after disappointingly discovering that the Historical Museum (which focuses on the Siege of Sarajevo and 1990's history) had shut just 5 days before we arrived due to lack of funding from the Government and other parties. After researching the news, it is apparent that most Museums / similar institutions...

The best section included artifacts from the various eras of the region's history. Many, but not all items, had explanations in English, but some of the English translations were laughable, especially for a "National Museum". The botannical garden is lackluster and tired. The receptionist was smoking in the doorway, which can't be great for the exhibits. Museum curation was a...

The museum lost some of its exhibits during the last war, but the building has been lovingly restored. It is a beautiful, grand building, although not huge. Disappointingly, the touch-screen outside the room, which should have told the Haggadah's amazing story, was...

The National Museum, is well worth a visit. It gives a history of BiH from the neolithic age to modern times. It includes sections on natural history and geology. Sadly it's seriously underfunded and it's opening hours aren't extensive, but well worth a trip.
A part of the museum was closed, but we saw many fine peaces of Illyrian and Roman carvings and mosaics. Upstairs we could look through the locked, high-security glass door of room 37 to glimpse the Sarajevo Haggadah, which is one of the most important items on display in the Museum. With an estimated value of more than $700 million,...

We visited the museum in August 2006 on a Sunday morning. Check opening times with the tourist office.
Main building: partially closed, visited the archaelogy section (2 small floors) which was under renovation, interesting, but unfortunately much of it was not in English; very nice exhibits however
Garden: some interesting tombstones (stecci), but I expected more as did not get...
