This is on of the best things to see in Sofia, full of many fascinating archaeological finds. It is also not overwhelming for the non-museum type. Easily walked through in an hour, everything labeled in English. Make sure you see the ancient gold.

An intriguing collection of ancient artifacts - some of which are of suerb quality. The stories in some of the medieval Christian wall paintings are beautifully presented so that one can observe their details at close range.

THe mueseum was well presented and has a good collection of Roman sculpture but the hands down winner is the huge collection of Scythian gold in the upstairs gallery.

I nearly didnt get into this museum.I tried twice and the door appeared to be locked.I was walking away when a security guard opened the door.By Bulgarian standrards it was expensive,10BGN as compared to 4 in most others.am i being cynical but do i detect that prices are increased where the museum is frequented by tourists.there is some descriptive panels... An impressive collection which gives you a real insight into the rich history of Bulgaria. Focussed mostly on the ancient period. There is English signage albeit minimalistic. Slightly expensive by local standards (5€ per person) but a must see for anyone interested in ancient history.
