Actually now the Viles Arboretum, friendly staff and outstanding hikes with numerous botanical collections. New plan aims at making this spot a "don't miss" part of your Maine adventure.

Enjoy the miles of trails to run, walk, or x/c ski on. You have many chances to see deer, turkeys, and other wild game. Be careful or you may wind up in Windy Acres in Chelsea.

The Viles Arboretum -- formerly Pine Tree State Arboretum -- offers peaceful paths for a stroll and contemplation. A very pleasant place to visit. Not a large arboretum, but I agree with one of the other reviewers that it's probably unheralded and that's a shame. I especially enjoyed the hosta garden and the walk around the pond (see pic). Our time was limited, as was our mobility, but timing [May-June] allowed us to enjoy the small, elegant lilac collection not far from the parking lot [ it will need some separating and dividing one of these years.]. The Pine Tree State Arboretum does not have flashy floral plantings or shrubbery, but it a very pleasant place to take a hike. One of the highlights is a hosta garden with many varieties of these green, leafy plants.
