We went to the naval academy museum after the US sailboat show. Both had been recently renovated & they were outstanding & a must see. The museum had models of old sailing ships that were truly outstanding. The rest of the museum is well done also & is well worth seeing- it documents US history. We spent around 2.5- 3hrs... more
I just took a day trip to Annapolis, Maryland and it was great. The main part of the town is small, but it has a lot of historical interest, including the state capitol and the Naval Academy. After taking a morning tour with Capitol City Colonials and a fantastic afternoon tea at Reynolds Tavern (both reviewed elsewhere), my mom, 12-year old and I decided to walk to the Academy to visit the grave of the founder of the U.S. Navy, John Paul Jones. The visitors center was so-so; I was hoping the short movie would be on the history of the academy, but it was a recruiting film. Be aware that on Saturdays you cannot go inside the chapel--it's reserved for weddings. (You can still go underneath and see the crypt of John Paul Jones.) And the Museum is currently closed for renovation.... more
My wife and I visited the academy on a gray and cold day but it was a great experience. One can pick up tickets to the tour at the visitor's center (location of a great souvenir shop). For only $8 you get a one hour and 20 minute walking tour of the US Naval Acedemy. You get to go in the buildings and see all kinds of sights. You even get to go into the dorms! Visit on a Thursday! After the film and tour am stand and watch 4000 midshipmen line up at 12.05pm and be inspected and then march into lunch to the band! An amazing site, several of the older 'officers' come up and chat to the crowd and answer all kinds of questions about their lives and future plans, really interesting. more
