The theatre itself, built in the late 1800's, is a jewel box inside--with graceful balconies, damask panels and beautifully painted. The Split Ballet is astonishing, the opera first rate--don't miss a chance to see some productions!

While walking around the old city, we stumbled onto this landmark theater. We booked tickets that night for the ballet performance of Zorba the Greek by the local company. The theater has been beautifully restored; the performance was excellent. Prices were reasonable. A reminder that some of the best travel experiences are the unplanned ones.

After all the hard ship this country experienced, culture is still important to Croatians. If you have an opportunity to see a performance at this theatre..do it! We were there for a holiday classical program along with local children singing Christmas Carols in English and Croatian. When the conductor asked the audience to join in, we were the only Americans...
