We happened upon this temple at the hottest hour of the day at lunchtime, and as you may imagine, there were only a handful of people other than us. I cannot say that I was impressed by the structure of the temple, but then again, this was among the last ones we viewed. The view, though, was worth the visit.... More

Like many others I had read that this is a good place to go for sunset. As you might expect, it was extremely crowded. The experience of climbing up the hill with a hundred other people was interesting. I didn't mind, as it was a different experience, but I would not repeat it. I am surprised that more people do... The panaromic view is good from the top, but the circus of watching the sunset is not worth the effort, unless you take joy in watching the crowd clamouring for a viewing spot from 4:30pm onwards. We did not take the elephant ride to the top. Found the climb quite short and easy.

Over crowded and over visited. This temple is exhibit A in terms of evidence supporting why Angkor visits will be radically different in the years ahead. Dozens of tour buses descend on this temple as sunset approaches. Virtually empty the rest of the day! Someone sold a bunch of uninformed, lazy people that this was the definitive sunset experience and... More

This was my third place to watch a sunrise, and while Angkor Wat and the lake had kept me pretty surrounded by people, this place was almost empty. The only downfall of that being you don't have 50 other people to follow to help find your way. My advice, bring a flashlight/flashlight app...i was not prepared for the total lack... More

Bakheng is the one place we visited at Angkor that it badly organised. Everyone wanted to be there at sunset and we gullibly joined the throng. The ascent to the top of the hill was a moderate 15 minute walk but once we got there - 4.50pm - we were met by a queue of about 200 people waiting to... More

We were really saddened by our visit to Phnom Bakheng. Firstly, it's the only time we've had to queue for any part of the Angkor complex. We arrived for the climb up the hill at around 4.30 pm - it takes about 20 minutes (with a 65 yo mother). When you get to the temple, you join a queue of... More

We'd seen that this temple was last on the itinerary for most of the tours, selling it as a must see for sunset. So we decided to go there mid morning (after doing sunrise and exploring Angkor Wat), there was about 6 other people there! The views are amazing and make it well worth coming here just for that. They... More

An excellent venue to enjoy mother nature spectacular. Other than the sunset cruise at Tonle Sap, I truly recommend this trip. Just be early to get a vantage view. Be advised that the abundant locals peddling their Khmer tour books, curios,...might affect your enjoyment a bit...that said...most of them know well not disturb you when the critical juncture when the... The Phnom Bakeng is one of the temple closer to Siem Reap, and it's also the oldest one of Angkor Thom. This mountain-like temple is on the top of a small hill. This temple hasn't many carvings as, I was told, in the ancient past the temple was partially demolished to build there a Big Buddha statue. Now it was... More
