We had the place all to ourselves to explore. Beautful white sandstone formations, an easy walk from the parking lot. The landscape here is really beautiful and unlike any I've seen elsewhere. The last battle scene in Cowboys and Aliens (with the alien ship) were filmed here. Worth a look.

Georgia O'Keeffe painted these cliffs, which are the compacted tufa ash of ancient volcanos. It's on the property of the Islamic Center of Northern New Mexico, but they are fine with you parking your car in the small dirt parking lot and hiking on their property. This area near Abiquiu is gorgeous. Tall white mountains around a stream bed. Off the beaten track but worth the drive. I happened to see the white cliffs from Abiquiu Inn one afternoon when the sun was just right.
