Incredible sculptures and paintings of artists and monks from 200 BCE to 600 CE. A dazzling World Heritage site not to be missed! I don't think I can add much to what's been said in the reviews, but it is important to choose the time of visit as too much heat and/or rain might spoil the pleasure. The caves are... More

Impressive Buddhist caves with very large statues and carvings. The paintings are difficult to see clearly because it is dark and they are damaged. The setting is very beautiful.

Here I give an account of my experience as a visitor to Ajanta caves on May 10, 2012. We—myself and three other members of our family—engaged a non-A/C car from our hotel in Aurangabad to Ajanta caves (105 km away) and back for Rs.1,900. The road was very good and we reached the caves in about two and a half... More

I took the ST bus from Aurangabad. Takes about 2 1/2 hours. The place is closer to Jalgaon (1 hour) Then, to get into the complex, I paid Rs. 10/- amenities charges(??) (just to walk through a flea market and some shady hotels) to the shuttle bus stop. The bus ticket was ok - 7/- for non ac and 12... More

Ajanta is amazing. I do not have the words to describe it. Take lots of water and a packed lunch as there is nowhere to buy food and beverages during the walk through the caves. Wear comforable shoes that are easy to take off and put on as you have to remove them for some temples and take a flashlight.

The caves are beautifully cared for with excellent guides who are able to bring the place alive. Having been hidden for so long one is able to see history that has not been plundered or defaced back to 400 BC and paintings from 600 AD in exceptional condition. Warning - Go early in the day as the area gets exceptional... More

These Buddhist caves were started around 200 B.C. and are absolutely amazing. Given that they were "lost" for 1000 years and only rediscovered in the 19th century, the paintings are well-preserved and tell detailed stories of the life of Buddah and the culture at that time. Should be one of the Seven Wonders in my opinion!
