If you're in Madurai you might be tempted to overlook the Thirumalai nayakar mahal as it's so close to the much larger and world famous meenakshi temple. This would be a mistake. The palace is beautiful but very small. Apparently only 1/4 of the palace exists today. There is a light and sound show in the evening which starts after 6 but the palace museum closes by 5:30. The place is good visit for an hour in the evening.

After Sri Meenakshi, the palace remains are kind of a let down. They are newer and really mostly of "foreign" influence. However, the two big remaining buildings are very impressive... no matter where they would be. It is in a so-so state of repair. They were redoing the exterior gardens when I was there, it will be a vast improvement... More
