For me (I'm 65), best done on a reasonably powered comfortable scooter or cycle. Our Toyota Vios automatic behind buses got old quick. And if you do take the bus, carry something soothing to drink.

Fantastic scenery, with some hairpin bends which aren't for the faint hearted. Make sure you allow enough time, although the distances aren't that big, with the roads it'll take longer than you think. Best to spend couple of nights in Pai, 1 in Mae hong son & 1 in Mae sariang.
Beautiful forested mountain roads. The road is twisty and sometimes rough, but not scary. Loved it!
We drove ourselves in a hire car from Chiang Mai. We found the loop challenging at times as the road is extremely winding. We loved the trip and would advise others to do it.
I travelled the Mae Hong Son loop over 8 days with my family. Lovely drive, beautiful scenery and amazing people along the way. 1863 curves, a bit of car sickness but definitely worth it. Mae Hong Son and Pai are great destinations.
Excellent but not as quiet as it once was. Beware the lunatic drivers!
My husband doing the complete loop with me as the pillon. As we rented only 125cc, we can't ride fast with all the steep curves. Because of this we can enjoy the scency on the road better. Weather is super cold when up the mountains. A great riding experience.
