Our time was limited, so we decided on Khami Ruins instead of Great Zimbabwe, which were very well preserved and easy to get around. We spent about four hours touring using a guidebook, but guides are available if required. The signposting to get there isn't brilliant so ask in Bulawayo

I visited Khami ruins last week. The road is okay, by Zimbabwe standards. There was one road block, the police were polite and did not try to shake us down for a bribe. There is a site attendant and a police officer at the gate (just a chain between two poles, which the policeman lets down for you to drive... More

A Unesco World Heritage Site, situated 22km west of Bulawayo, the Ruins consist of series of terraces and passages supported by massive granite walls, some overlooking Khami Dam and Khami Gorge.
