It was very beautiful but as it was raining where we were there, we could not see too much. Lots of shops and restaurants around the lake too. Easy to get to - just hop on the bus and get off at the Kegon Falls stop. Short walk to the lake from there.

We went in late March when there was still melting snow on the ground. Only a few tourists were there, and only a few tourist shops were open, but we liked having the lake essentially to ourselves -- plus there were no swan-shaped paddle boats in the water yet (these seem to be the rage in warmer months). Late March/early... More

With snow-covered mountains and clear blue skies, you couldn't have asked for a more lovely landscape.

Lake Chuzenji can be accessed by a bus day pass which can be bought from the JR Nikko train station. On our arrival in the lakeside town, the entire area was blanketed by a thick fog which reduced visibility to a few metres. Although meant we couldn't see the nearby waterfall, walking along the lake was actually a pretty cool... More

We were there in mid-Nov. As most leaves have fallen, perhaps the area is not as beautiful as it should be.

Journey early and take the Shinkansen from Tokyo station to Utsonomiya, then local train to Nikko. This way you avoid the crowds, especially if you just take a day trip. Check the bus schedules to Kegon Falls/Lake Chuzenji in order to maximize time at the shrines and old houses at the World HEritage Site. Try yuba delights in any of... More

The lake is lovely, just down 500m from the mountain top village. You can rent giant SWAN paddle boats there, it was fun with a Sapporo beer and some grilled local fish and roasted chestnuts.

I visited Lake Chuzenji on a one-day bus trip with a tour operator to Nikko and the surrounding areas. Perhaps it was the fact that it was a bit unexpected, but the lake and waterfall (see separate review) were quite enjoyable. It was made all the more memorable because this was my only day "out in the country" during my... More
