Lake Chuzenji can be accessed by a bus day pass which can be bought from the JR Nikko train station. We were there in mid-Nov. As most leaves have fallen, perhaps the area is not as beautiful as it should be.

Journey early and take the Shinkansen from Tokyo station to Utsonomiya, then local train to Nikko. This way you avoid the crowds, especially if you just take a day trip. Visisted the Onsen at the hotel. What a lovely experience!

The lake is lovely, just down 500m from the mountain top village. You can rent giant SWAN paddle boats there, it was fun with a Sapporo beer and some grilled local fish and roasted chestnuts.

I visited Lake Chuzenji on a one-day bus trip with a tour operator to Nikko and the surrounding areas.
