A great introduction if you haven't been inside a traditional house of a feudal lord. Everything is well-preserved and you get to see how the upper class of society lived and how they went about their daily affairs. Rooms might appear spartan compared to the grand palaces of Europe, but this is the Japanese aesthetic.

Plenty of space and a very good impression of what life in such a house might be like. Not authentic in that it has been rebuilt and not enough English descriptions. Beautiful gardens and grounds.

The Hosokawa Mansion, which dates back to the 1600s, is only a short distance from the Art Museum and Kumamoto Castle but is easily missed unless you happen to venture to the side of Ninomaru Park that is furtherest from the castle and the City.
