We regularly ride our jetskis out the the islands and snorkel off of them. We have seen sharks, turtles and rays while snorkeling!

I'm pretty in love with Akajima's Nishigahama (Iribama)beach. while a lot of coral has died these last few years, there is still enough colorful fish and occasionally a turtle to warrant the 1000 yen or so for snorkling gear

beaches are paradise, nearly unspoiled and non-overcrowded... close to Naha (less than 1 hr express boat) very friendly people a lot of outdoor activities (snorkling, kayaking, swimming, whale watching (seasonal), etc..)

Took a hancho to Naha bought a round trip for the ferry. awesome view on the ferry, went camping on the araha island in the keramas it was amazing. we climbed the rocks, went snorkeling and we camping on the beach. Spent 2 nights on Zamami Island, population around 700 people. Beautiful, quiet island, with a very small village of small shops, restaurants, etc. Beaches here are the main attraction - excellent snorkeling/diving at the shallow reefs and beyond. Whale watching and sea turtle watching during particular seasons. Great, easy hiking watching sunset/sunrise at the observatories. Amazingly warm and friendly people.
