Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a lovely place to do crafts or to purchase crafts. The one downside is that it is hard to get here by public transit. Worth a stop if you are coming to the area!

We arrived at the bus stop in Yumoto and began the uphill 20 minute walk to the Akiu craft village, only to find a couple of the shops/workshops open. The area is obviously set up to handle tourism, great parking area, very clean toilet facilities but is seriously let down by the lack of crafts on show. It was a case of same same with the few shops that were open. We definitely could have spent the day better.

We visited Gangu-an in Akiu Craft Village with our child. We weremadevery welcome. First you can choose your kokeshi wooden doll shape. A short introduction is given to how to paint a traditional kokeshi and how to use the paints. Then you are free to design your own kokeshi wooden doll. The staff glaze the dolls at the end and your free to take it home.

In Gangu-an they received a prize from the Prime Minister for the shop's kokeshi making skills. We would love to try it again one day.

So glad we made the detour having been to the onsen town; everyone was super friendly. One kokeshi maker took us to his workshop and had us making bits and pieces with the lathe! He wouldn't take any money for this. One of the friendliest places I've visited in a long time - worth a pit stop if you're in Akiu onsen town for sure. They have some really beautiful kokeshi dolls, which make excellent gifts.

We were staying in Miyagi and decided to drive out here. It definitely didn't seem very welcoming to foreigners. There are a few shops that sell wooden toys and Kokeshi. One shopkeeper was very friendly but the rest of them just stared at us or ignored us. You see a number of flyers advertising this place in English; it seems like Sendai wants to push this as a tourist location but I can't see most foreigners enjoying it.

I have been living in Sendai for a while and I just recently discovered this jewel that's very close to Akiu hot spring resorts area. It is also easily accessible by a bus ride from Sendai station, and is home for traditional local crafts not only to purchase but also to make your own. The crafts you can make by yourself for 1000 Yen fee each include Japanese wooden dolls called Kokeshi, wooden tops, chopsticks, indigo died hankies and wooden keyholders. The workshop owners are very friendly. It was a little bit cold when I visited in December, so by my experience of other Akiu trips I had, I would say the best time to visit will be spring or summer.
