It's an interesting museum where you can read main facts about russian history from end of 19th century till nowadays. However the exposition is in russian language mostly. On the other hand this museum is located in an English Moscow Club mansion so it would be interesting to walk there anyway.

Also it's located close to Tverskaya metro station so if you don't like it you are ready to go anywhere else.

I was very excited about this visit, but it didn't live up to expectations. The museum is set in a building previously belonging to an aristocrat, it used to be the English Moscow Club. It saves quite a lot of its original grandeur. The main issue is that English translation is hardly every available; so non-Russian speakers will lose quite a lot of the historic bits. Still, there are so many fascinating objects that don't require translation, like a room devoted to all the presents received by Stalin in his function of head of state. A poster represeing the political situation in Europe at the end of the 19th century, in which every country is portrayed through a caricature of its leader. Also very interesting are the last rooms, where a video portrays post-communist Russia. It offers a view of which image Russia wants to offer to the world (in fact the video is in English). I am afraid I have missed the Russian music section. The section on the Stalin year was under re-construction. In fact, this museum was originally named "Museum of Revolution", but the name was changed into the current one for obvious political reasons. As every Russian museum, all information is censored / doctored, so it is clear that Putin's aides are re-thinking their portrayal of the Stalin period. This is what you will find in every Russian museum. I would say that this is better than others in many respects. I spent 2 hours even without being able to read all the explanations. I can envisage Russian speakers or tourists with a Russian guide to spend even longer.

This museum covers a lot of russian history in the last 150 years. However, most of the captions are in Russians. There are quite a few interactive maps/TVs with English subtitles which will help you understand the context. Admission to the museum is 300p. Students get a discount - this museum has a lot of potential to be one of the greatest museums of Russia. It is located right in the city center close to subway lines and everything else you may need.

After getting trough the whole Nikas Safronov exhibit we missed one narrow hallway turn leading to the final room that actually represents artists strongest and coolest paintings logically being hanged at the last room.

Not realizing this turn is a way to that room went back to the exit where we realized that room isn't here , were out of the exhibit now but actually are able to see it through the entrance that is closed by now and the tickets not working again.

Asked a personnel lady to let us back in for that final room to get a glance at it quick and were roughly denied the entrance with no explanation, moreover with her shouting she " warned" there was the "turn" for the final room and that turn does not for some chance have a turn notes or anything like that whatsoever. Ar that time we were instructed by an angry lady to go downstairs to talk to the administrative director for details.

We went down the stairs and asked the rep desk for help and were yelled at front only asking but for the fact that its our faults, that theres no administrator in the Museum at all and that we shouldn't even be talking to them. and that to visit that one square meter of that room again we should buy another full priced ticket )

Generally Museum is cool but the personnel is hilarious in an awful way.

Be aware of that before you head to visit it

For us this had the potential to be the best museum we visited on our trip to Russia - Moscow and St Petersburg.

There were some wonderful objects on show, particularly from the contemporary/recent Soviet period.

BUT
Except for English room plaques in most, but not all, rooms describing the theme of the room, there was no English on the actual items labels.
And
6 rooms were closed for renovation, and these were for the period around 1917 ie the Russian Revolution. We were not told of this when we bought our ticket

And doubly frustrating

There were several electronic touch-screen displays but they were 'English translation awaited', and weren't very reactive to touch anyway.

The lack of English aside, this is a comprehensive account of contemporary history right in the centre of Moscow. The building itself is fitting, the pieces try to build a narrative around a fascinating 150 years and explain Russia's development. It's also extremely cheap and is open until 9pm.

If you want to understand 20th century Russian history, starting with the Tsar's Russian empire, Bolshevik revolution, soviet era and post 1991 Russia, this is the place. Although the very recent Putin era history is kinda propagandistic, the museum still worth visiting.

Some English text available in each room to help with understanding (more so than many other museums in Moscow) but sadly there's not loads.

Clearly the museum is updated a lot as there was even information on Putin's latest election, the World Cup 2018 and Syrian War.

Unfortunately due to refurbishments going on until March, most history from 1906-1945 (ie the interesting stuff) isn't available at the moment.

Lovely little museum, a quick underground ride from Red Square.

Some of the museum was under renovation when we visited, but what we saw was well laid out and the exhibits were spectacular - particular favourites were the Hammer and Sickle telephone and the dog spacesuit.

There is also a great selection of Soviet era propaganda posters (my main reason for visiting) - an hour amongst these and you really did want to help build the socialist Utopia!

This museum has great exhibits (with Rusian language descriptions) and digital English text overviews of most rooms. Covering the last 150 years of Russia's history both domestically and internationally, the panorama is truly impressive and the commentaries surprisingly objective about failures as well as successes. You need to be a bit interested in Russian history from the Revolution to the present day to appreciate the challenges that the empire faced, and the momentous collapse of the Soviet Union in recent times. Between 1 and 2 hours to make sense of Russia's contemporary history. I visited on Saturday afternoon - hardly anybody there.
