An interesting place for those interested in Russian history, since the Convent played a truly imortant role in it. Enough to say that it was a place where some of the most prominent noble ladies, ex-wives and close relatives of the Russian princes and tsars, were sent to spent the remaining years of their lives after commiting certain crimes against... more

The place is a tranquillity spot in rushing Moscow. High bank of Moscow river, old barocco-style walls of the Convent, nearby pond with mamas walking their children and birds singing everywhere - you can only relax and think about the God for a moment. Khamovmiki, the district where the sight is situated, is one of the most historical in Moscow.... more

This convent was one of the few in the immediate Moscow area that was not razed by the communists. According to our orthodox priest, it was used sort of as a propaganda "set" to show outsiders that "yes, we have religion alive here" during communism. Regardless, it is a very beautiful site. We have just returned from a week in Moscow and the Novodevichy cemetary is certainly worth a visit. You will need a guide book to help locate some of the 'famous' graves - and there are lots of them- as there are so many spectacular statues etc and unless you are very familiar with the Russian language it is difficult... more
