It's typical but very big orthodox church. It's just replica of church which was destroyed in Sovjet time. Problem that this replica was builded in the poorest times of Russia. Goverment spent billions US dollars for costruction of this giant church when couldn't pay pensions to old men and took billions dollars of western credits.

For me this is more of the history monument. Great lesson about the past. Great choir to listen during the service.

We actually saw the bell ringers ringing bells in the towers prior to a wedding.

beautiful for a newly built replica of the destroyed cathedral, there is a nice walk from there across the river with view at the Peter the Great statue\monument, or at least one of his ships? (which he learned to build himself ingognito in the Netherlands)

Lovers of cathedrals may cringe at the following sentiment, but after visiting at least a half dozen cathedrals in Russia I thought they had all started to look the same. I will fully admit I'm not an aficionado of the art form, it's just that they all seemed to have far more similarities than differences. That all changed with a... More

The Cathedral was blown up by the bolsheviks and what you see is a replica of that Cathedral. If you want to learn more about the history of the place, see what Stalin wanted to built on this place-go to the bottom part of the building(separate entrance on the right, you need to go round the corner to enter).
