It was devoted to the Victory in 1812 over Napoleon's army and situated on Tverskaya Square, but in 1930's was disassembled and rebuild only in 1960's on this new place.
Once it was situated in downtown, now the gates are a bit closer to Europe to remind europeans about Russian victory over Napoleon
Its clearly Napoleonic in part of the design. Sitting on a central island with 5 lanes of traffic speeding past on either side has taken its toll as in 2012 it will be taken apart, re-enforced and rebuilt so it may be out of commission for a while. Go now
