Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery is a somber, powerful place, which stuns you with the contrast of neatly landscaped mounds and mostly open space, and the the reality that around you are about buried about a half-million people. I visited this cemetery with my Leningrad hosts during my trip to the Soviet Union in 1991. I was deeply moved being there and I cried a lot.
