It is nice and quiet and close to the Perl River. However, there are many building renovations and road constructions going on now to cope with the tourists of the Asian Games next November. The environment is therefore less pleasant than expected. Better go there after the Games. more

This island is surrounded on three sides by busy streets but the alleys of this island is mercifully quite and peaceful. Everything about these alleys is quaint; the trees, the colonial houses, the modern - made to look old - sculptures. During the day you can enjoy a walk, have coffee or lunch or just enjoy watching the numerous brides... more

Shamian Island is a reminder of Guangzhou colonial history and covers an area of 24,000 sq meters at the side of the Pearl River. It is not a true island, the name Shamian means sandbank, and it is now connected to the rest of the city by a series of bridges. From the mid 18th to the mid 19th century,... more

Great place to go when youve had enough of the busy Guangzhou city life. And only a quick 5 minute walk from the metro. Dont expect anything extrodinary. But there is alot of cool architecture with a kind of 'new orleans' feel to it. Cobble street roads A really rustic looking Starbucks with a nice outdoor patio. Or grab a... more

I've travelled over much of China in the past few years - I spend about half my time there- and keep going back to Shamian to wind down. In the restricted confines of this island, firmly attached to Guangzhou city by a number of bridges, you can relax in the park and watch local Chinese people enjoying themselves practising Tai... more

We visited Shamian Island In August of 2006 and found it to be a great place to shop. Many, many shops and GREAT DEALS! You can't beat the prices anywhere. A relaxing area to shop and less hectic than many of the other areas of Guangzhou. The stores are very friendly and eager to please. more

I regularly visit Shamian Island in Guangzhou, and it is a place to wander around and feel the atmosphere of years ago. There are many places to eat, sit and watch the river traffic or just savour the view. The White Swan Hotel is just one of several and worth a visit You do not have to be an expert... more

Very very quiet place - unless you're a huge fan of standard european architecture don't go there except for peace and quiet. Only 4 or 5 shops, we could only fine 2 places to have coffee, one of which Lucy's is very good - other than that we cold only spend 1/2 hour max there without getting bored. more
