The Kaiping villages are absolutely worth the effort. You'll have to take a bus from Guangzhou to Kaiping (2h) and from there on to Chikan and surrounding villages but it is also easy to negotiate a fair price with a van-taxi once your are in Kaiping. They're well off the beaten track, even once you've arrived in Guangzhou or Shenzhen you need to take a bus to Kaiping and then another to the actual site. Tourism hasn't really yet taken off for individual travellers which is great in one way in that respect, you can explore the buildings quite freely and without too many crowds, though... more
