The Stone Forest is very touristy, but if you take the longer route and then take a path off the beaten track it is fantastic, You see the most amazing formations and hardly see a soul. The Stone Forest is by far the #1 attraction in Kunming, a fact not lost on the local tour groups. Over 3 million tourists visit the Stone Forest every year, mostly big Chinese tour groups on big tour buses. Brilliant geological features, but for 140RMB (about £14) the price was a shock! Also so busy it was a bit like disneyland! If you can, find one of the smaller stone forest's nearby that avoid the crowds and the price. more

Back when I visited the Stone Forest in 1988, it was a great experience. In Yunnan's mild winter, the plum blossoms were highlighted gracefully against the strange gray rock formations, and at night, you could see a million stars. One step off the limited concrete paths, and the crowds dropped away, leaving you to get lost among the towering rocks.... more
