Like most tourist destinations in China, West Lake is ususally crowded, especially during May and October Holidays. The best time to go is in the spring, however we went in June - which was also nice albeit humid (occasional pop up thunderstorm in the afternoon). A breath of fresh air, West Lake is surrounded by superb scenery. The lake is split by two causeways which one can walk or cycle along and there are numerous well tended parks.
