there were no guides to take you around the museum. There was no body there hardly while we were there - tourists or staff! I was surprised that it was so empty/dull - lots of seperate buildings with artifacts etc. Signs were in english also which was good. There were many looms etc with samples of fabric. If there was... We were ready to do an air conditioned acitvity after many outdoor sites in Hangzhou in the hot August weather. The museum is air conditioned and has good overview of how silk is produced and history plus beautiful garments from earlier times and with different types of silk and weaving. Young and older adults in our group all enjoyed this... More

We sure hoped this free of charge museum would be as nice as the tea museum we visited the same day. Alas, it wasn't. While this museum had much more to see as exhibits, it felt more of an excuse to have amajor silk shop inside it. I was personally hoping to see the entire process of making silk, either... More

A great way to learn about the history and culture associaated with one of China's most famous products. The exhibit are well laid out and nicely presented - in both Chinese and English (amazingly clear - no Chinglish here!). Best of all, admission is free.

It is a small place with only 1 theme. If you are interested to learn about the production of silk, this is a good place to go. No tourist trap for you to spend your money buying. Instead, they have educational video, exhibits, real silk worms and cocoon, and related houses, weavers and trees. Children and senior are free. Adult... More

I would suggest this before heading out to shop for silk in Hangzhou. It gives you a real insight and appreciation for silk production. There is no charge and the exibits are endless. It's also in English!!!!

Last year I had the privilege of being able to spend a few hours at the National Silk Museum in Hangzhou. The museum was built especially to illustrate China's great heritage of silk textiles. The interactive exhibitions explain the life of the silk worm and the making of the cloth. However the most amazing articles which were on display were... More
