The walk to the Dome and Peace Museum will take more time than planned, if you arrive by shinkansen, but well worth the views of a major Japanese city. Without the stark, sobering reminder of the Dome, one could easily forget the devastation that existed right after the blast. The Dome, Museum, paper cranes, etc all combine to create a... more

We currently live in Japan but on one of our trips before moving here, we wanted to see Hiroshima without the kids. If you want to see a lot of Japan in a small amount of time, I recommend getting the JR Rail Pass. We were able to see several cities in one week for less than it would have... more

The Peace Memorial Museum presents a balanced explanation of why the horrible event took place and heartbreakingly describes, in words, pictures and artifacts, the aftermath of the bombing. It deserves to be visited by anyone who goes to Hiroshima. Part of the museum shows the city both before and after the explosion and concedes a shared responsibility in what occurred,... more

The train ride from Kyoto to Hiroshima is not a long one, especially if you are smart and purchase a railpass from your home country for unlimited rides on all trains, including the high speed shinkansen (Pass is not available once in the country, just google it and you'll find info on it). The ride is well worth it, not... more

Some of the displays were really shocking, but that sort of IS the point of a museum that is promoting peace by showing the negative affects of war. I probably wouldn't take children younger than 12 here, but many people do. Depends on the child. I found the info very interesting. I would recommend studying a bit ahead about various... more

Our family went to this museum in July. We took the self-guided audio tour. The tour was very informative. It gave our family more insight on this tragic event. The exhibits were very moving. The clothes of the children and tricycle of the little boy were especially sad to see. We had re-read the book of Sadako before going. It... more

This museum is an experience not to be missed if you want to see first hand, the result (read : futility) of war. It gives an excellent, totally unbiased account of the history of Hiroshima, and the lives of its' citizens right up until 08:15 on the 6th August 1945, then details the resultant suffering, pain, and eternal torment from... more

As an American travelling around Japan, I felt that it was important for me to visit this important historical site for both Japanese and American history. The entire peninsula between the Hon and Motoyasu Rivers are now part of the Peace Memorial park and museum. It's fairly easy to access--there are several bus stops nearby, plus the many roads leading... more
