The architecture is wonderful and its situation right in the city is interesting in its incongruity.

We really enjoyed our visit to Toji Temple. It was fall, the colors of the leaves were changing and the gardens were beautiful. We enjoyed visiting the historic pagodas. It was nice to spend a few quiet meditative moments under the enormous Buddha statues. We bought some nice postcards and enjoyed a Kyoto green tea icecream in the local shop...

One of the 3 temples i think worth to visit in Kyoto. There is something worth to see inside the tower. It is on par with Sanjusangendo, which is the other good one. A must go. I am very harsh and have high standard in terms of historical site and heritage stuff.
This temple had been one that I was looking most forward to but I was actually disappointed in the end. All the information I had found said the entrance price was 500 yen, but the price was quoted at 800 yen when we arrived.
It truly is a beautiful and impressive structure but you are only able to walk through...

To enter the inner part of the temple complex with the best views of the pagoda is 600 yen. If you want the absolute best camera shots, then the ticket is worth it. Otherwise, there are a lot of good views of the pagoda from outside.
I visited on a Saturday and there was a huge flea market going on.......

An oasis of calm, you can walk through the grounds (no fee) and get a good enough look at the pagoda and some of the more important buildings from the outside. However, the 500-yen fee for the Kondo (Main Hall), Treasure Hall, central garden and to see the pagoda close up is worth every yen. I was lucky to come...

We visited on August 16, 2011. The buildings and interiors are amazing. There is an entrance fee but it is worth it. We spent a couple of hours here taking pictures and looking around. The pagoda is great!
Visited this temple during the day we were leaving for Osaka and didn't think we would be blown away! In my opinion this temple ranks right up there with Sanjusangendo if not more spectacular! Great temple with statues (national treasures) at a nice central location.
I happened to be in Kyoto on the 1st Sunday in April and was able to attend the Antique Market at Toji. There were over 50 vendors selling: obi, kimono, Imari ceramics, glassware, samurai paraphernalia, kokeshi dolls, scrolls, small tansu and many other items. Opens 0500 and closes 1700. Subways open at 0530. Definitely worth a visit. The vendors are...

A bit out of the way, this was one of the least touristy temples we saw in Kyoto. Mostly Japanese tourists even in cherry blossom season. The Pagoda, which you can see from many places in Kyoto poking above the rooftops, is interesting to see up close. There are lots of turtles in the ponds around the pagoda and plenty...
