Eikan-do is specially lit up during the evening as part of the 'Koyo' or maple leaf season. While crowded, it is truly beautiful at night with lighting used to illuminate the red and yellow leaves of the trees that surround the temple. I recommend getting there a little later (in the last hour) to aviod some of the crowds.
