Truly this is a unique piece of art and it is constantly evolving since the artist likes to add or replace tiles to his liking .It is better to start the visit from the bottom of the stairs because 1) the view is nicer 2) it is easier to climb down rather than up after the visit 3 ) you... More

This was on my list of things to see when visiting Rio and I wasn't disappointed! The thousands of tiles decorating the steps is a unique sight. The artist's gallery is in number 24 - it's very easy to walk past without noticing but definitely work a visit if you want to pick up a souvenir.

A must see when in Rio De Janeiro. The tiled stairs represent one man's passion and love for Brazil in vibrant colorful tiles collected by the artist and sent from visitors from around the globe. We spent a fabulous hour or two walking up the stairs, looking at the tiles, reading the artists thoughts, as well as having the pleasure... More

Wow! This is truly a unique and colorful piece of Rio! Jorge Selaron, has been adding colorful tiles to this amazing staircase of over 200 steps for more than 20 years. He has added such vibrant colors which has transformed a simple stairway into a collection of reds tiles and other tiles that people have contributed, from all over the... More

Our guide suggested we go here. We had never heard of it. It is well worth the visit because it's so unique. Apparently the artist has been working on this for over 20 years. People have contributed tiles from all over the world. The artist lives half way up and sits outside sometimes to sell tiles to visitors. He loves... More

Selaron, whose full name is Jorge Selaron, has been adding tiles to this amazing staircase of over 200 steps for more than 20 years. He escaped from Chile during the dictatorship but had to leave his pregnant wife behind. She and the baby died. He devoted himself to beautifying the area of Rio in which he lives and it is... More

Is it art? I'm not qualified to judge. It's truly fascinating. A visual feast, the likes of which I have seen nowhere else except Parc Guel in Barcelona. You'll notice a theme running through the painted tiles of Jorge Selaron. Try to discover the tragic reason behind his fascination with pregnant women as subjects for his paintings. It will give... This one is for those who appreciate popular art. The stairs were decorated with colorful tiles, chosen at will by Selaron, an Uruguayan street artist who fell in love with Rio some decades ago, and became a wide known character in bohemian Lapa.

Part of our planned Rio tour was a trip on the Santa Teresa tram but a terrible tragedy a couple of months earlier had taken the tram out of service so we were unable to ride it. However, our guide still thought it worth a visit to Santa Teresa to visit Selaron's studio and what a pleasant surprise this was!... More
