Petropolis is a great break from Rio. The palace and colonial past is a thing to see and spend some time with. They have an Octoberfest celebration there every June (probably in October as well). I daytripped to Petropolis and found it to be a nice place, not glamorous, but an interesting town to spend an afternoon. Its at a higher altitude so the tempature is a little cooler even when the coast is very warm. See the palace and enjoy the architecture of the surrounding buildings, I wouldn't reccomend staying over night there. more

Petropolis is close to Rio and much hyped. However, it is dreadful - dirty, crowded, has few sites, and most accommodations are depressing. We went for 3 nights - and stayed for one. The best thing about Petropolis is the bus ride there and back. more
