Even though you may find that you are not allowed to ride on roof (due to an student accident) this is a great train ride! Great scenery, marvelous feat of engineering and riders from all over the globe! Just stand on the rear platform-that is exciting enough! ...but a lousy "chiva-express" bus on rail. And you are not even allowed to sit on top of it anymore (even if it has seats on top). If you fancy a ride in a bus in some mediocre landscape. go ahead. This has got to be one of the best train journeys in the world - but it's hard to get reliable information. We arrived in Riobamba on a saturday - the train runs on Sundays, Wednesday and Fridays (although around festival periods this seems to change). We went on a rainy day, you are no longer allowed to sit on top of the train and still this was a great experience! The views are wonderful, you travel through some interesting little towns and can buy tasty treats to eat when you stop in a small mountain town. If the weather isn't good, take gloves.
