A half-day trip to Elephanta Island is a great alternative for visitors who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I visited Elephanta Island just a week before the terror attacks in Mumbai. We took the first ferry at 8.30am from the Gateway of India jetty for a delightful 1 hour ride across the harbour, interspersed with great views of the Taj Hotel, the naval dockyards, Butcher and Cross Islands and colourful ferryboats. It takes over an hour to get to Elephanta caves in a packed ferry, leaving from the Gateway to India (if you want to sit in the upper level, be prepared to be charged $10 rupees extra on board). There's a short walk to get to the caves and admire the 3-face Shiva sculpture and some other half-destroyed figures. That's... more

I've been to elephanta a couple of times ...its a good place for a day trip with friends or family and the boat ride is quite pleasant. Its best during winters when the sun is not too hot and the sea not too rough. There are many ticket agents close to Gateway of India selling tickets for the boat ride.... more
