We did this climb (the one that started at 3.30am at the Guides office, you are at the lookout by 6.15am and then you walk the crater for another hour, back down by 10.30am). As we had a car, we organised it ourselves at the Guide office between Kedisan and Toya Bungkah so we would not get ripped off by... more

Initially we planned to climb Gunung Agung, which is the highest mountain in Bali, after the Gunung Rinjani plan failed. But we were told by the tour agent that even though Gunung Batur doesn’t rival Gunung Agung in stature, but its accessibility and beauty are beatable especially the view of sunrise. So changed our mind and hike Gunung Batur instead.... more

Yes, this is a physically demanding climb for most people. Yes, there are loose rocks on the trail that you can slip on. Yes, the guides are more expensive than the rest of Bali. BUT ....once you get to the top and see the sunrise over the peaks it is all worthwhile. Keep an eye out for those pesky monkeys... more

I did not do the sunrise climb. My climb started close to noon and ended around 4pm. It was not an easy climb. I would suggest wearing proper gear (sports/hiking shoes, long pants, long-sleeved shirt and even gloves...). We started at over 1000 m over sea level to climb the balance 717m to the peak. Initially, it was flat land... more

Both my spouse and I were not fit enough to trek up the volcano peak and so we hire a car and driver to drive us one morning to a "lookout" point on the old crater rim overlooking Lake Batur and the Mt. Batur volcanic cone. From this point we can see the black lava flows and the lake glistening... more

Once you have waded your way through the hordes of souvenir sellers you can see the stunning views from Kinatmani. We drove from KInatmani to Tulamben - the diving spot and the views were great. more

Gunung Batur rises from the bottom of a volcanic crater which also contains a lake. The initial view one gets from the crater rim is quite superb - almost the whole circumference of the crater is visible, with the lake and mountain within. On the west side of the mountain can be seen recent black lava flows. Batur has three... more

Mountain hiking isn't easy especially to Mount Batur which stands at 1717m above sea level. That means, a hiker would have to expect 2km of walking up to the crater and another 2km down. Based on my experience, Mt Batur hiking is not for the unfit, this includes overweight individuals, old folks, kids. In fact, those without proper shoes with... more
