Reality Tours & Travel was founded with two main objectives: to break down the negative attitudes that many people have towards people from the less developed communities AND to play a crucial role in achieving real social change in these areas by putting money back into the less developed communities. With this aim we started the Dharavi Tours 2006. We pledged at this time that 80% of the profits after tax from our tours would be donated to local NGOs. From May 2007, we decided to get involved ourselves and set up a Community Centre. To increase the social impact we founded the NGO Reality Gives in 2009 when we opened the Muskaan Kindergarten in Dharavi. At the moment, Reality Gives activities are almost entirely funded by Reality Tours. Since 2010 we expanded our tour program. We want to give a deeper insight into Mumbai, it’s all day live, it’s culture, it’s people and contradictions. For this we set up different tours: Market Tour, Mumbai by night Tour, Public Transport Tour, Bicycle Tour and a Village Tour. We are not just another tour company pretending to be socially responsible. We genuinely don’t think that it is right to do “Slum Tours“ and profit from it. When we carry out the tours, the sentiments of the people in these areas are what is most important. We believe in creating a social impact through our tours and through listening to the residents of these areas and finding out what change they want to see in their communities. « less

Before we embarked on our recent May holiday to India we decided to see what experiences we could benefit from on the days we were in Mumbai. By chance I came across the 'Reality' website and when I showed my wife Heather it did not take us long to decide this is part of real India...it's about the people. So... More

I had been working in the potters section of Dharavi for a week when I took the Reality Tour so I had a sense of what I was to experince in other parts of the community. The guide was personable, informed and sensitive. The tour was conducted in a matter of fact way, without drama. It is afterwards that you are... More

I was amazed by what I saw during the tour of Dharavi. This tour does not show Dharavi in negative light. On the contrary it explains how millions of people from different communities exist together peacefully and operate successful businesses with scarce resources. The staff were very friendly and well informed. This is a definite to-do for anybody who is... More

I backpacked around India 20 years ago when it was a lot poorer and even coming back on business in 5-star luxury, was pretty inured to the poverty. Well I didn't know it all, not by a very long way. Dharavi changes your perspective completely, showing how these people managed to earn their daily lives and stay positive. Most seem... More

We did a long tour of the dharavi slum with reality tours, which was great because it allowed us to see the slums in a manner that was both respectful and beneficial to the workers and residents without turning them into 'living tourist attractions'. Our guide knew a great deal of information about the industry and standard of living in... More

You cannot go to Mumbai and not do a tour of the slum. It gives you an incredible picture of India and how people live. It is not a negative tour at all, it just points out the positive and negative aspects that makes India, India for the people who live there. Absolute highlight of the trip. The village tour... More

We toured India for four weeks and this was definitely a highlight. We had the most wonderful tour guide, Krishna, who took us (4 adults) firstly through the commercial side of Dharavi. What an experience seeing the working conditions and the people at work. We had plenty of laughs with the workers but I also had plenty of tears (behind... More

We took the short tour in Mumbai and thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Dharavi Slum. It was the highlight of our tours in India - it was so interesting to learn more about the slum and was completely different to what I had expected. I saw the slum in a different light - I had expected to feel upset at... More

Definitely worth a trip - a real eye opener that provides a better understanding of life in legal slums. Tour guide was excellent. Remember to wear proper shoes and plenty of mozzy spray. You're not allowed to take pictures so leave the big, heavy cameras at home!

I just finished a 6 week tour of 8 countries. Our tour with Reality Tours of the Dharavi Slum was, without a doubt, a top 10 life experience. Forget Slumdog Millionaire......this tour was the real deal. Not what we were expecting.......while the poverty and living conditions are shocking, seeing how these people live and make a living was amazing. Not... More
