The volcano is beautiful, but if you come thinking you might see some activity (or as the pictures show a little red lava flow) you are several years too late, as it hasn't spewed lava for years. That said, it is a very beautiful cone with an interesting history and certainly I think it worth seeing.

Arenal Volcano national park was interesting but not very well managed. Could drive up to observation point - no reason to walk - and be at base of volcano but not much different from views anywhere around the volcano on regular roads. Hiked the trails and they were ok. The name of our excursions was Arenal volcano Hike, which we arranged through Jacamar Tours (nolti tours). We booked this excursion knowing that it would be a long drive. The hike was long and sort of dull.Dangerous and rocky at points.The view is OK if it's clear enough to see.The tram ride at the zip line place gives you a much better view without the rocky climb.I guess it would have been better if the volcano was active.

The hike was wonderful and enjoyable. We went to all the areas on the trails. You need to remember that currently the volcano is dormant so there are no plumes of smoke or lava flows.
