I stopped on my way to Puerto Limón on this place attracted by the traffic signals announcing this place as “National Cacao Museum” (false promotion as it’s private business and not related to Costa Rica National Museums network at all). I was quite disappointed as the visit was 15 minutes long showing some cacao trees and the chocolate making process... More

We had a short view to a couple of huts and saw a cacao tree and that was pretty much what they offer on top a degustation. The price is overated and there are other original cacao places run by the local families in the area that we were told afterwards they are better choice. We went there with our car... More

The "Chocolote Tour" in the Tirimbina Forest Reserve is a private initiative, and was highly recommended by my Costarican tour operator. The Reserve, which is fantastic (see my separate review on it), is situated near La Virgen, on the Rio Sarapiqui (north-central Costa Rica, Limon province), just alongside the main road. English-speaking guides pick you up at the entrance and... More

It was fun making the chocolate by hand and was definitely interactive. Our guide didn't really seem to care though. He actually complained to us at one point about how poorly he gets paid. So his lack of enthusiasm (maybe for good reason) sorta put a damper on the tour. Was fun eating the chocolate though.

It's a very good tour with a great guide which explain us how to make chocolate from the beans (we've seen on trees and tasted) to the whole making process and finally we ate our own made chocolate ! The guided walk in the plantation was very instructive too.

We had a wonderful English speaking guide called Reynaldo who spoke the most interesting variety of Caribbean accented English (We could have listened to him all day long). Upon arrival in the unassuming parking lot we actually wondered if we were in the right place at all. We were led to the actual entrance down a path by a machete... More

it was a very good choice to do the tour with our kids ( 3 and 5 years old), because we had a german speaking guide of our own. so it was a really good value to compare with other guided tours we had. espacially to make our own chocolate was a very good experience for the children, beside the... Learned a lot about cacao and had fun tasting things along the trail and then making and eating chocolate. Saw quite a lot of wildlife, including a baby armadillo, sloths, caymans and the ever-present howler monkeys.

The entire tour takes about 2 hours, although if you want to nature walk more you can. Very interesting tour that educates you from the Cocoa plan, the pod on the tree, the raw seeds, drying, roasting, and turning into some rich fudge right there in front of your eyes like they did 100 years ago. The nature walk was... More
