from the visitor's center.  But to better appreciate the natural beauty of the area, this is a great place to get information.  Natural history displays and occasional films shown in a small theater make this an excellent introduction to the nearby Byron and Portage Glaciers.

Cool, newer informative center beside Portage Lake will give you local and glacier history lessons. There is usually a ranger (of sorts) on hand to provide interesting tidbits. When the wind is blowing (or has been) in the right direction, expect to see icebergs next to the visitor center.

Love the Portage Valley and the trail of Blue Ice, just watch out for the blackies. They're everywhere. Great place for snowshoeing, skiing, hiking. The visitor center is worth a look at least once, but after you've paid their entrance fee, I doubt you'll go back. You should at least see the movie they have...especially if you're making a summer... More

The visitors center wasn't open, but we loved visiting the glacier. Lots of pictures at the glacier and the surrounding areas. FUN!!

We stopped in briefly to check it out since we have a National Park pass. The center provides some good exhibits about the area, and glaciers in general. We had already spent a large amount of time at the Mendenhall Visitors Center a week before so much of the information was repeated. However, the National Park Service does a great... More

Our weather on the day we visited the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center at Portage Glacier was not great but our visit was. The foggy weather and high winds pushed some glacier fragments close to the Center on Portage Lake and it was pretty exciting to see the big, blue chunks of ice floating around. Inside, the visitor's center has great... More

What a surprise! The Visitor's Center is inter-active and educational. The Rangers are very helpful, and answered all of our "dumb" questions. There are several hikes up to the glacier, and you have to be aware of bears, but it is all worthwhile. In August, watch out for the red gnats. A good dose of insect spray will work, otherwise... Visitor center is a must stop location whenever we have visitors, the staff is great and very knowledgeable about the area and the glaciers. Also a great spot to get out of the wind and rain. The kids liked the faces, the adults enjoyed a chance to sit and watch Voices From the Ice.

The other reviews tell the story, but we'll reiterate that it is worth the stop. But before you get to it, leave some time to also make stops along the road to the center. There are river views and other glaciers up in the mountains to look at. Had we known, we would have allotted more time at the center.

This small visitor center ended up being a big surprise for us that kept us busy for several hours. The nearby views are nice, with glacier chunks floating by. The exhibit was very entertaining with a really cool glacier movie (that we saw twice). We had fun with the interactive exhibits, especially the sound effect machines.
