We did a day trip to Avila & Segovia from Madrid. I pre-booked the Renfe tickets (which cannot be booked more than 62 days out) on their website (when it worked :S) and when it didn’t I used this website http://petrabax.com/ & paid the small fee they charge for booking. In my opinion, the $5 fee is well worth it... More

The walls have been scrubbed and repaired to a condition that may be the best in the life of the city. There are a lot of tourists, but most are Spanish, so the word is probably not out. What makes the wall so charming are the ubiquitous storks. They nest on the cathedral, churches and other buildings. We did not... More

Avila was once the city of Kings and located on more than 1100 m of altitude, makes it a highest spanish capital ever. The romanesque walls hold 88 turrets with 1.3 km to walk around. The best thing is that is wheelchair friendly. I am from Dubrovnik, Croatia, city with famous 2 km long city walls but there is no... More

Its an amazing medieval site just 1.5h by car from Madrid - definitely worth visiting. The only thing, which I did not fully "like" was that it looks almost brand new, which does not keep the original spirit; especially comparing with different similar sites I have seen.

Doing a day tour from Madrid to Avila and Sergovia we did not have any time to visit the walls after visiting the Convento de Santa Teresa and another church. The walls certainly looked awesome and we intend to properly inspect them next time.

A with most things, you have to pay a small fee to go up onto the city walls but most people will find it worth it to do so. The walk around the ramparts allows some spectacular views of the city and the surrounding countryside. In most places the walkway is wide enough for two people to walk abreast very... More
