Good value bus tours, recommended but not essential. You see most things but it's a bit long winded. Try to get up top and make sure that you get your headphones for the best audio experience.

definitely reccommend try the red and blue hop off and on buses, cheap and they go every where
We took the on and off bus to give us a better feeling of Cape Town. As we were still being attacked by jet lag, we didn't get off except at the Botanical Gardens. the commentary on the bus was clear and easy to hear...they provide ear phones, and ridin outside upsyairs was delightful.

City sightseeing busses are great for hop on/off and good value for money as they go all the way round the important areas and pretty much keep to the timetables published
Great walking city. Beautiful parks. Amazing weather. Safe as well. Don't listen to people who say otherwise. Green port area is a very central place to stay. Your within walking distance to the wharf, business district. Restaurants galore and their all good restaurants. You will have a hard time choosing.
We weren't in cape town very long and when we arrived we discovered that we probably should have rented a car. We were staying at the hotel attached to the convention centre and discovered this tour stopped right outside. We bought the 2 day ticket that allowed us to use both the red and blue lines plus a canal trip....

Ear buds for you language, good narration. Saw a lot of historical sites and narration about them was good.
Just be careful on the meandering road to Table Mountain if you are afraid of heights. The cost is manageable and worth it, especially the 2 day ticket. It would be even better if the buses would reach as far as Cape-Point
