STORE /BOUTIQUE DETAILS: African Trading Port is housed in the V & A Waterfront’s Old Port Captain’s Building, a beautifully preserved, historical, three-story landmark from 1904. Featuring an immense array of artwork and objects d’art from practically each African country and culture, our gallery includes sculpture, artifacts, textiles, bronze ware, jewelry and more. Our unique collection is made possible by our art-scouts who travel specific regions of Africa, going deep into the rural areas and working directly with local communities. Great emphasis is placed on the originality of the goods we source and fair practices in terms of prices paid and regional laws. Our contemporary art collection focuses on the work of recognized artists however we also showcase younger, emerging artists from the African continent. We hit the Greenmarket Square vendors thinking we would get bargains and came away practically empty handed. Later we went to the the African Trading Port at the waterfront, expecting the prices to be high. This was not the case! Everything we saw at Greenmarket Square was equal or cheaper at this store! And there was no haggling with vendors.... More

This large store is near the Nelson Mandela Gate to Robben Island, where the ferry departs. It has a huge inventory, ranging from small souvenirs on the first floor to larger pieces and antiques on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Well I guess that is what is on the 3rd floor because a burly guy standing on the stairs would... More

The building, which houses The African Trading Post is beautiful and so well placed on waterfront. It looks very attractive from the outside and makes for some nice photos. In terms of actual shopping, we agree with other posts and found tthe souvenirs to be quite highly priced at The African Trading Post. However, there were some nice items inside... More

2 words, OVER PRICED. The African Trading Post had many authentic pieces of African art. However, many pieces could be found at the Green Market for much less. Also note that the store is owned by English. If you are in Cape Town for a while you should go to Trading Post to look around and then go to Green... More

Great place to see a huge selection of wooden giraffes in various sizes and woods and colors. Top 2 floors have a lot of unusual items, bottom floor is more touristy. Fun place to wander around. Juli was very helpful in picking out the giraffes, but shipping to the US is costly.
