Salinas Grandes, the great salt flats of Northwestern Argentina, is a magnicent expanse of salt deposits, over 3200 mi2 in extent. It has long sustained an indigenous culture that does sustainable salt mining but mainly lives off llama herding and personal agriculture and, in the modern era, tourism, the local people's major source of cash revenue. This "altoplano " expanse... More

Although I never made it to the REAL salt flats in Bolivia this was great! A lot cheaper and a lot shorter of a trip and I am happy with my decision of choosing this instead of Bolivia. I got some great photos and saw what I needed to see. A must see and it is only a half day... More

Definitively, you should get to the Salinas Grandes. Not only they are impressive by themselves, but the road there is also impressive. Either going up through the Cuesta de Lipán, or either going via San Antonio de los Cobres, the road is an added bonus to this terrific place. Be sure to take your sunglasses!!

We spent a day with Humberto of Vantage Tours in Salta. The trip went up through the Tastil ruins, paralleling the "train to the clouds" route for a while, stopped for lunch at San Antonio de Los Cobres for a llama stew lunch. The salt flats were still wet from recent rains, but you could walk out. Trucks shoveled piles... More

A wonderful place to visit...beautiful colors in a natural landscape. We had a wonderful tour with our excellent tour guide Umberto who works for Vantage tours. We learned about the geography, natural history, past political and cultural history and present history of Salinas, Jujoy and Saltz. Worth the excursion for our tour guide's sense of humor alone.

This is one the most beautifull place I have had. To get there you first have to go to Salta, then you rent a car, take the road for 2 hours to Jujuy, and after driving 3 hours from Jujuy you get in Salinas Grandes, Ufa! You stay there for one hour and then go back to Purmamarca or Jujuy.... More

These are impressive salt flats although smaller than the ones in Bolivia. However, they are very accessible so you can go on a day trip and at night stay in comfortable accomodations unlike in Bolivia where you have to stay in rustic accomodations.
