If you're a world traveler, this is an absolute must see. The building are carved into the red sandstone cliffs and are definitely worth a full day of walking and photographing. No guide needed. The only downer was the prevasive mistreatment of the rental donkeys.

Best scenic hike ever if you like the heat like us. All these troglodyte caves are wonderful, in both the human made carvings and the natural beauty of these ever changing sandstones.

We asked for a driver to take us to Petra as we didn't feel we needed a guide. We were met at the port by the driver, who transferred us to another car, then drove us to Petra where we did our own thing for as long as we wanted, then found the driver who drove us back. He stopped... More

Petra is amazing and well worth the hefty entrance fee. Set off at a reasonably early hour from the site’s main entrance, avoid riding a horse/donkey – we saw numerous examples of mistreatment, the worst being one of the owners bouncing a rock of an animal’s head to get it to move, wander through the Siq until the breath-taking Treasury... I have visited Petra a number of times and it never ceases to amaze me. These huge structures carved directly into the sandstone truly should belong to the list of seven wonders of the ancient world, on par with the pyramids of Giza, the lighthouse of Alexandria, the hanging gardens of Babylon... Having lived in the country of Jordan for... More

I would recommend a morning trip with a respected tour guide/company. They can give you valuable information concerning how to deal with vendors, horse/camel rides, etc. Being experienced, they can also tell you how to best care for yourself in this desert climate. Have a few dinars or dollars available, and only purchase from those the guide recommends...and how he... More

My biggest advice would be to stay a night in Wadi Moussa and get to Petra first thing in the morning. There are no crowds, no tours yet, the temperature is cool and it is a wonderful experience. We did it without a guide and loved it!

We visited Petra in April and it is a beautiful and truly a seven wonders of the world. I would recommend if you are of Arab origin then take some Identification with you as you pay 1 Dinar and if you are not then you pay 50 Dinar, quite a bit of difference, especially if you have a big family!!!... Driving out into the desert at night was a magical experience. To see the stars with no light pollution was something which we will never forget. Ten million pinpricks of light in a clear sky- wow !!! The Rock Camp is run by Bedouin Arabs who entertain tourists with a fantastic meal - lamb/starters and sweets/ and also play atmospheric...
