We spent an intriguing couple of hours on Sunday April 22nd at the Castle Jail which is free to visit. The central building has a display on the history of the town itself including a couple of great films - one on the Callant's Ride and one on the annual Handba' game - both shot in the mid-90's. The outer... More

After visit to the cells the door to get back through to the main museum seemed like someone was pulling it from the other side and not letting us get back in until one of our party just opened it without any problem. If you have psychic tendency then this is worth a visit.

Brilliant place for families. Free, interactive, full of fascinating facts. Combine with the Abbey, the playpark, Mary Queen of Scots House and you've got a day out.

The fact that this is free probably raises it from average to very good, especially if you are holidaying with kids and constantly forking out for entertainment. It's not quite as good as Inveraray Jail but beautifully maintained and an insight into a jail that was away ahead of its time when it was built.

Great setting and lots of interesting stuff. Also used as a venue from time to time and has good 'themed' exhibitions

Interesting, free and very informative look at part of our social history. Went with three teenagers who all found it interesting and well worth the effort. Great little gift shop. Dressing up opportunities for the kids. Lots of information. Clean and well equipped toilets.

We looked forward to visiting the museum and jail - unfortunately we found a lack lustre welcome in the reception area with visitor passes unceremoniously thrust into our hands. Signage was poor throughout and we found it very confusing to know where to go next. We have been to other jails such as Inveraray and found these hugely interesting and... More

If you want to experience what life could be like in a 19th Centuary prison in Scotland, then this is, without doubt, one of the places to visit. The Audio Tour handset is a MUST at only 50p, as the attraction is run, maintained and managed by the local council. It's free to get in. The Audio Tour story is... More
