Simply stunning, untrammeled, isolated beauty in the otherwise hectic and crowded Monterey Peninsula. I visited here mid week in late May and pretty much had the park to myself. I suspect that the park gets quite crowded on weekends. All the trails are easy to maneuver and well marked. Several trails let you go down to the water's edge. Highly... More

Very close state park just south of Carmel. I did a bit of research before coming here, but Dick, the staff person in charge, recommended the best trail to take for a beginner like me. I parked my car at Whaler's Cove and started my trek on the North Shore Trail. There, I encountered a family of deer, birthing otters,... More

Park along Route 1 and walk the path next to the road, or drive in and pay to park. Several short and easy to walk trails out to the points. Beautiful scenery. In the Spring you can see baby harbor seals on the beach. The trails are mostly shaded and there are benches to stop and rest and enjoy the... More

We were there on a windy day so we couldn't hike down to the tide pools, but, the other trails had amazing views. Lots of crashing waves on the rocks and intimate coves and Monterey Cypress trees.

Admission is $10 and that also gets you into Big Sur if you are headed further south (30 mins). Point Lobos is only about 10 mins south of Monterey. The reserve is very well kept and the trails were very nice and impressive to walk. We saw baby deer, sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions and lots of birds. The... More

I would highly recommend visiting the park early in the morning when there aren't a lot of other visitors. The best trail with the best views is the Whaler's Cove trail - you can see seals (sea lions?) giving birth in May. It is seriously so beautiful - totally the best thing about the Monterey peninsula!
