Highway 9 heads northeast from Santa Cruz into hills densely timbered with massive redwoods and Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park where we walked Redwood Grove Trail, a flat, easy .8 mile loop around the giant redwoods. At the visitors’ center we encountered an especially delightful 70-ish docent named Marie and learned about riparian and sandhill habitats as well as redwoods.... more

A great place to see.....especially the old growth redwoods on the center path. The gift shop is VERY friendly, even to dogs. Roaring camp is next door, so make a day of it! Have a picnic! more

All set to go camp in a lovely redwood forest and to our dismay, the prepared campsite is ringed with poison oak! For someone who simply must look at it to get it, being around so much poison oak is both psychologically and physiologically distressing.
